The necessary overdue apology to our youth
We Nigerian adults have really messed up. We have affected your future profoundly and inflicted horrible pain on you. No other civilized society will inflict this much pain on their youth, their children.
We corrupted you. You see us daily, when we fail to honour our obligations and accept bribes, you witnessed our police personnel shake us and our family down for money, you here reports in the media of the horrible corruption of our political leaders and government officials, and you witnessed our judiciary’s injustice, bargain, and ‘settle’.
We stripped you of your dignity. Fairly used products have become new products to you because new has now become unattainable. Majority of you live with your parents till later in life because you cannot afford shelter of your own, you are unemployed even though you are college and university graduates. Many of you cannot afford to marry and have a family because of your hardship. You worked at positions that are much below your level of intellect because of limited employment opportunities. Your Reverend ultimate prayer for you is to gain access to another country, and you make testimonies when you attain a visa. We have really messed you up.
We have impacted your life. We have totally failed to provide security because we have failed to provide the infrastructure. You live in fear and stress daily, fear of having food on the table, fear of a place for shelter, fear of being alone and safe. We have done such a horrible job.
We allowed the corrupt, the least informed, least educated, and most wicked to rule your country while we adults stood by without fighting for your future. They have turned your country upside down and will leave you with nothing if we do not engage, expose, and contain them. We promise you with your support, we will.
We failed to provide the infrastructure you need to produce and exchange your production. Continual interrupted of electricity and water, unpaved and rugged roads, unregulated banks, unorganized society.
We are prodigal adults. We are rapidly giving away all the mineral and natural resources which God had assigned us for remnants which end up in the pocket of corrupt few. We are giving away your future.
On behalf of all adults in Nigeria, we, at ‘Nigerianpage’ apologise for all the pain we are inflicting on you. We are sincerely sorry and we promise that together we can correct our actions and inactions that will enable us to attain liberty, freedom, and happiness for us all.
Correct our actions and inactions
(1) You are angry at us the adults, the community, and the society. Rightly so, we corrupted you, we are stealing your resources and your future, we fail to provide you with the tools and infrastructure to produce, and there is absolutely no direction, no support, no organisation, and no discipline. We accept the blame. We ask that you accept our apology and forgive us. It is by your forgiveness that you will be able to move on in life without anger and have a good live and a better life for your children. For a society to be good each individual has to be good. Many of you may need counselling you may use this forum to ‘talk it out’, ask questions, counsel each other, and ask for direction and guidance amongst yourselves and from professionals.
(2) We need you to stop today all the horrible deeds you learn from us. No more corruption, deceit, bribery, and misrepresentation. Many of you may be afraid to stop because of their low wages but see how far those bribes have taken us. If we totalled the cost of corruption to our economy each person would have been 100 times better off. While we are busy extorting pennies from each other the big boys are stealing billions. They actually want us to keep this practice to justify their action and keep us all too ‘beat up’ to pay attention. Would you want your children in your condition today which will be worse tomorrow if this continue? Those in authority do horrible deeds because they accept it as the norm. If we stop they will have to stop because they will have no justification to be corrupt. You may then wonder who stop first. Why stop, when my neighbour who does not, have an advantage? We will together find the means to impress on our political leaders to create venues to report irregularities and enforce discipline.
(3) We all should participate in the electoral process. You cannot give up this important right. Presently the least educated and least informed amongst us vote and the least intelligent amongst us run our country we must correct our actions and start to actively participate, listen to the candidates platform, research their character, and vote. You the informed youth need to participate, to inform, to engage, and to expose our politicians. Some of these wicked politicians who are in power to destroy our country for their economic gain need to be exposed and contained. Many of you will assume that your one vote will not make a difference, but it takes one tree at a time to make a forest.
(4) We fail to demand that everyone in public office declare their verified assets before serving and no one demanded that those who ran for office and those who are appointed be vetted. If we know what they have before serving in office then they will have to account for the extra when in office or after. You the educated must actively participate, engage, inform, and expose flaws in our political process and system. Your absence creates a vacuum of knowledge necessary for these politicians who spend ¾ of their time in office to stay alive and the rest of the time????
(5) You should support your police personnel because without them no society can survive, they are the savior of modern society. Without them there will be chaos and economic hardship. They are paid poorly and we need to fight for a better income structure for them much higher than what they earn today. It is after we have paid them enough according to their responsibility that we ask for the screening for mentally, physically, educationally, and emotionally qualified police personnel and this is when we will expect them to be held responsible and be disciplined. There is a system so ugly in underdeveloped countries used to keep the society burdened and disorganized. It is imported, ‘keep the law enforcement corrupt and you corrupt the judiciary, the politicians and the whole society’. The police structure today is the origin of our corruption, poverty, disorganization, and dysfunction. Some people gain from it. You must inform and engage your police personnel, your media, your politicians and the populace. Let them know we are all being used.
If you accept our apology and contribute, participate, inform and engage our political, economic, and social structure, together we will start to condition the structures to fulfilling your needs. We adults will work with you. As we condition the culture we will begin to structure the necessities required for production, shelter, food, and security. When we have attained our primary needs our road to liberty, freedom, and happiness is paved ready for our journey.
