An open letter to the President
Condition our culture for imminent opportunity
Manufacturers all over the world search for environment that has the mineral and natural resources, skilled and reasonably cost of human resources, security, infrastructures that support production and the environment conducive to produce. Our abundant natural and mineral resources, skilled human resources (age dependency ratio of greater than 85%), a stable and reliable temperate, an admirable population, and very low per capital income has made our nation very ripe for a massive growth that will be the envy of the world. We have to start rebuilding our social structure in preparation for this opportunity.
Cost of labour, transportation, and environmental issues, the major determinant to optimizing profit in many developed nations, is influencing the location to produce. This associated cost has made the movement of raw materials for production to developed nations less profitable. Manufacturers today find production of the mineral and natural resources in the country of origin most economical, as long as the environment is conducive. This diminishing returns rule is what creates the opportunity that we have to prepare for else our natural and mineral resources will immigrate to our neighbouring countries with all the added values that comes with it.
Our nation must do all she can to condition us to conform to the rules of law, motivate our citizens to participate in, and contribute to, the nation. This is the most difficult task leaders in any nation faces. The task to attain this goal is enormous because our nation had neglected our social infrastructure for too long. The trust in the political leaders, judicial and law enforcement has diminished, every individual feel each is on its own, and majority believe the country will fail reason for the massive emigration, disregard for the rule of law, non-participation and non-contribution to the welfare of our country.
Suggested ways to condition our culture
Information
The most important function of a leader of a nation or state is to direct the citizen. The citizen cannot be directed unless they are fully informed. They are fully informed when they are engaged, allowed participation and motivated to follow the path determined by their leaders. We follow when we understand how, why, where, and when you want us to be directed. We collectively could contribute to your objective if you allow us to participate. Our participation and contribution will certainly motivate us to follow. For example it will be imprudent to place billboards all over the country asking an end to corruption. There has to be a structure in place. An objective that will be placed before the people and engage them to participate and contribute. In developed countries daily briefing of the leader’s itinerary, objective, and plans to accomplish it are presented to the press. This allow for the media, the opposition, and the citizen to know about this new objective, to criticize it, and to contribute to it. All parties in the political arena invade the media with talking points and opposing view point. In the process everyone learn more than before and the improved objective is understood and accepted or rejected by majority of the populace. We have to develop structures that will enable our leaders to communicate with us and for us to collectively communicate and support them to attain our needs. Special programs on state and federal television, radio, television entertainment shows should be supported and influenced to condition our culture. Create heroes and heroin that will support in educating us and create unity. The president should communicate with us at every opportunity to reinforce his objectives and accomplishments through radio talk shows, television talk shows, symposium, presentations at educational institutions, social and official events etc. We must utilize communication medium effectively. Majority of the populace must learn the leader’s direction from the leader and his designated representatives not from third parties that will distort the intent. A leader of a country must be able to condition the people to follow his/her direction. The forum that will enable free flow of communication from the leaders to the people and from the people to the leaders is crucial in conditioning a culture. For leaders to direct, the people must follow. No matter how good the intension of a leader the offer may be rejected by the people, because a gift is only an offer until it is accepted. Your influence will play a big role in conditioning our culture.
Organization
A society cannot function unless it is organized. The population distribution, gender, age, name of each individual, occupation, education, residence, etc. in real time, must be readily available to decision makers to support and discipline them. It is only when we know the population of 5-18 year old in an area in real time that we know how many schools to build, the required sewer, and the water pressure required. Businesses make decision where to locate on the available information of their target market.
In a house we have living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. These areas are compartmentalized. When we need a plate, we know it will be in kitchen, in the bedroom we find our favourite shirt hung in a sub-compartment, the closet, not in the bathroom. Likewise when we travel, we buy a map of the city we are visiting which navigates us to the destination. The traffic lights, the street names and the map guide us to and within the city. The number of the residence indicates our destination. Imagine if there were no maps to navigate us, there are no street names, address numbers and traffic lights, imagine a house with only one room without compartments how do we get through to our destination or find our stockings. If we have a structure that can navigate a city from afar for a house number why can’t we develop an assigned address for each individual and have an electronic storage and retrieval structure that can navigate for a name, an address, and triangulate on compartments or groups of occupation, local population, gender, age etc. The government would be able to direct, support, and discipline us with relative ease on real time. We the people will become responsible and motivated that our government finally know who we are, where we live, and appreciate that you will now have the information to know our needs. If my country cares for me and my needs, I, as a designated part of the society who is now responsible, will be motivated to care for my country. My country loves me and I love my country back.
Support our collective need
If in every nation every capable adult is a producer and each citizen is a consumer, no country should be richer than the other in their domestic national production. Any country that is poorer must pay attention to the satisfaction of the needs of her people to produce and exchange their production. In this quest we need support for collective needs that we cannot provide individually but are required to produce and exchange our goods and services with the least interruption. The support for collective need cannot be overemphasised it impacts our economic, political, and social life. The respect for the rule of law diminishes when people are poorer and economic hardship endures disobedience and dishonesty which directly influence the culture of a society.
Support that the government provides her people are not often a financial burden to a nation or State, most of the time they are self- financed by the citizen. The government raises funds from the sale of treasury bonds, to her citizen, to provide the collective needs and the user of the service pay for the services while the gains are appropriated to repayment of the treasury bonds issued.
Any country with continual interrupted electricity cannot be affluent. Without electricity production is severely impacted. Majority of the citizen see the government as inept because everyone understands that this is a basic need for production of goods and services. Most of us can see how it is affecting all parts of our lives. No country can pay us anymore than this to destroy ourselves. We, the people, are angry and this reflect on how majority have the least regard for the rule of law, many have either left the country or seeking to leave and others believe that our political leaders are either rewarded to keep us in the dark or they are not good managers and therefore believe the country is destined to fail. The need to maintain control on every resource under energy, centrally, has made the reasoning of our government very irrational. Why don’t we have electricity (hydro) separated from energy so that each State that has the capability to produce hydro can produce it? The federal government can either pay these States for the production, kilowatt input into the grid, or forgave them the hydro infrastructure. In all affluent societies every State or province produce or purchase their electricity. Allow and support States that have the resource and capability to produce it and sell to States that do not have the resource or capability. Enough of whatever is hindering our pursuit of happiness.
In the pursuit to exchange our goods and services produced efficiently, effectively and economically we need good roads. We need to transport ‘in’ to our place of production all input needed for production and transport our finished product. The underdeveloped roads create additional expenditure for repairs and maintenance the reason why our vehicle life expectancy is low and those who provide services in transportation are not profitable. This is the type of services provided that is user- financed. If we are a digital nation it will be easy to monitor the revenue from driver’s licence, tire tax, road tax, and vehicle registration. Corruption had exhausted all these funds. If you do not give us the opportunity to produce our goods and services at the least interruption so that we can optimize our production we will be under producing and collectively we will be an underdeveloped nation. When we are under duress we become stressed and angry at the provider of collective needs. These are part of the pain we suffer daily. This is part of what affects our culture it is what cause corruption, bribery, and disrespect for the rule of law.
Pay attention to our basic needs
In every society shelter, food, and security are basic needs of her members. If these needs are most important why do we pay the least attention to it? We become a member of a community for safety, there is safety in numbers. We also live together so that we can produce what we do best in exchange for what we need. Most importantly we need a place to live and keep our family safe. The ability to attain these needs at the most effective, efficient, economical, and at the least interruption makes the people of a society affluent and satisfied. If everyone in a society want these needs it must be a profitable venture for all the people if organized and it must play a major role in the society’s wealth and culture.
Security
Security is a major determinant of where any human being wants to live. It is a fact that all poor countries have no security infrastructure for her citizen, the main reason they are poor. What we fail to understand in underdeveloped nations is that it is the collective individual contribution that creates the GDP of a nation. It is also what creates the beauty, the culture, and happiness. If we believe that we are save even if we are individually poor, we will contribute our might to support our society. Our country cares for us when she makes us save. We will collectively contribute our effort to make her save. The worst feeling to have is to believe that each one of us is alone, it create chaos.
Presently during a home invasion there is no one to call. In States where you can, there is no response even when our life and that of our family is in danger. When you learn of imminent danger such as a robbery plot, a plot to hurt our political leaders, irregularities such as hydro lines on the street, an accident, fire, etc. there is nowhere to call or no response. Everything that is created has to have an infrastructure with responsibilities and accountabilities attached.
There should be a ‘call center’ in each town, a place to report irregularities and imminent danger that will distribute all calls to the concerned departments. These ‘stand- alone’ centers must have regulations, procedures, rules and laws that will guide it. The call center’s employees are trained on how to handle calls and where to direct all calls. Nationally emergency calls should be the same number it will make usage much easier when visiting, travelling through, or new in town. The numbers must be very short (no more than three) because when we are in distress we are not in a rational state of mind.
Our law enforcement agency and the judiciary have become a laughing stock of the citizen, foreigners in the country, and the world. We as a people are embarrassed. How can we feel safe when those who are sworn to protect us blatantly harass and daily extort from us? There must be political and disciplinary solution. Our society will remain the same or worst 50years from now if this horrific culture remains. How do you expect us to conform to the rules of law, contribute to our country, have peace, have any respect for each other and authority when you refuse to control, discipline, and direct, those that are to enforce your rule and make us safe. Do we know how much those in transportation business loose to extortion? Do we know how much stress each person suffers daily from these institutions? Do we know how many people will be rounded up on the street today and placed in jail for absolutely no reason, by the police, so that their parents could be extorted? We need to start having serious conversation going forward our country is heading towards total chaos. We must have a place to call and immediate response when there are irregularities, and when our lives are in danger. Most of all we need to trust and respect those who have sworn to protect us. It assures us that we are not alone and that our country cares about us. This has great impact on our culture.
Food
Food is a primary need of every human. The society that can feed itself with least import will be economically advantaged. Could this be the reason that every affluent nation has mechanized farming? If the average food consumption per person per day is 1000 grams, Nigeria has to produce 1000 x 146 million grams of food per day to satisfy the need of the society. We cannot provide this amount of food without mechanized farming and we must start appropriating lands for farming. The cost of food is a major contributor to inflation and poverty. The amount of food production if organized will increase our individual and collective wealth. We must structure training of farmers on book keeping, usage of equipment, through educational institution. We need to also train and structure farmer’s support workers. Organised mechanised farming increases production, employment, and economic growth. No society can become affluent until it can feed itself. The creation of this infrastructure is self-financed. Train and educate farmers, finance their land, equipment, and seeds. Use the land and equipment as collateral. The farmers pay the apportioned loan payment for equipment, land, and seeds after combining (harvesting) and borrow for seeding for the next season if need be. Yes I understand Nigeria is atypical but it can be done if the political will is there. It has to be done in concert with all necessary needs to condition our culture. We must be able to provide a major proportion of our society’s food intake.
Housing
In affluent countries housing is so important to the economy it is one of the leading indicator of economic activity. In our society we have yet to structure the housing market. Most of us do not sell our houses generations of families reside within. There is no mortgage system readily structured to stimulate housing production. We have not designed a structure that will train our carpenters, painters, roofers, glass producers and cutters, landscapers, bricklayers, etc. There has to be a structure to co-ordinate all these related needs to work in concert. The land and buildings are fixed assets that should be mortgaged with relatively low down payment. We don’t have to pay in cash for our housing. It is a basic need and the cost creates a lot of burden if paid in cash. It impact disposable income and hardship which lead to corruption and major effect on our culture. This is a self-financed arrangement between the people and the financial institution but the government has to provide the infrastructure. Identification system that will assure name and credit history, a reliable judicial system, an organized and reliable lands title transfer and rules and regulation that will guide the banks and the society on mortgage. This mortgage system creates abundant employment in housing construction and other added values such as all the necessities that are purchased in a home e.g. furniture, household equipment, lightings, hardware’s, etc. It is a major economic stimulant. We neglect all the real economic motivators. The easier a society can attain their basic needs the better that society will be culturally, economically and politically.
Other contributions to condition our culture
The main objective of any leader of a country is to minimize the burden on the people and ensure that they endure the least interruption in their daily lives. Insurance of life, health, and property do lessen interruption and burden in our lives and without it leads to corruption, theft, and nonconformity to the rules of law.
When the head of the family dies, the livelihood of those left behind should not be severely burdened and impacted. We witnessed daily the impact it has on families in our country. Majority of our citizens have no life insurance because they are not informed, they do not trust the institution, or they cannot afford the cost. Increased awareness and discipline of the insurance companies will lessen the fears of insecurity, provide safety net, and lessen the fear of being alone. In countries with life insurance the death of a family leaves millions of dollars to the nuclear family left behind. This enables continuity, lessen financial burden, and reduce interruption which controls all the factors that motivates corruption, deceit, and theft.
A healthy populace increases the national gross production of a nation. Every Nigerian should be encouraged to have an affordable health insurance. Illness in the family and the associated cost will affect the culture. If it is a long term illness, families often expense lots of money they cannot afford. The burden leads to poverty and interruption in our livelihood which transgress to theft, corruption, and dishonesty. If all Nigerians are issued a health card which can also be used as (digitised) identification card, at a cost per year that will give each a free medical treatment when they are ill e.g. at a cost of 200N per year. This will create a 200X146millon Naira. Since we are all not going to be sick at the same time there will be funds to take care of those that are sick and lessen our burden. If all of us are informed and encouraged to insure our health it will increase the insured and lessen the individual premium of insurance.
We should be motivated to insure our assets; our house, business, vehicle, and major asset at an affordable cost. It is already too burdensome to build a home, to buy a vehicle, and other assets in cash. The loss has major impact on how we conform to the rule of law. The loss of major assets if insured will be replaced. The cost of insurance will be high if only a few insures. The power of the leaders to direct and inform the people to follow in the path that will change their lives for the better is crucial to conditioning a culture
Conclusion
A Society that produces and exchanges their production is rich. An organized society that produces and exchanges their production efficiently, effectively, and economically with the least interruption is richer. A leader of a country must continually support the citizens by identifying any form of interruption in their ability to produce and exchange their production and develop the means to organize and direct them towards the path to resolving the problem. We the citizens are producers direct and support us to produce with the least interruption. The basic needs of humans must not be neglected. Make us safe, ensure that we all have roof over our heads and support and organize us to produce food to feed ourselves at an affordable cost. Inform and direct us to optimize the management of our lives at the least cost, by ensuring that we have continuity or uninterrupted life in spite of potential tragedy. Organize the means to support and discipline us to conform to the rules of law.
This is the beginning to conditioning our culture. These infrastructures are needed by our country for the better livelihood of all and the opportunities that will come with it. I ask you Mr. President can we start today. We are ready and motivated to be directed, to collectively contribute and support you, as you develop the infrastructures to support us. We are 146 million strong. ‘A mistake is not an error until we refuse to correct it’ JFK.
