AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR

We Nigerians applaud your governance. You have contributed a lot to Lagos State. The roads, the beautiful physical structures, the clean-up of the state, the businesses you have brought to this beautiful State, the transportation structure, and many good things you have made possible, thank you.
The Island still remain vulnerable to natural disasters. You must protect it and the people within it. The ocean water level is rising and natural disasters are occurring more frequently as the ocean gets warmer. It is the function of the political leaders of a State or Country to be proactive and pre-emptive in protecting her citizens.
We do not wish for disasters but we must be prepared for its occurrence. What would we do to lessen its impact on the people?
(a) The water level is rising please raise this dike if need be. The federal government will contribute if required. While I do not suggest that the dike is too low, the sea level has really increased I hope you have done your due diligence on this matter.
(b) You will need emergency centers and emergency personnel readily available on the mainland and at the highest elevation on the island for those who are distressed, in danger, and/or in need of medical care. You will need to start advertising the call centers numbers to call today and have personnel ready to direct calls. Please use no more than three numbers the universal number all over the world is 911. Please start today.
(c) You will need equipment to move distressed citizens. If the disaster is extensive you may need to move people to the mainland. Helicopters and boats may be required (in case the bridges are destroyed). You may also need equipment to go through the debris after the disaster to get to the people that require help and for clean-up.
(d) If a major disaster do happen people will be injured and many will be displayed from their homes please have ready medical centers for treatment, and places for those displaced to live temporarily until normalcy. You will need durable goods, beds and beddings stored away at easy access for this possibility.
(e) It is important for personnel officers assigned to this possibility to start having drills of eventualities and the means and method to resolve potential situations.
(f) We are not a digital nation. It will be difficult to locate missing people. We must device methods to determine the number of houses and residences and numbers of our citizens in arrears they reside in today.
(g) You must have in place warning systems or mechanism that will give the people some time to find higher ground for safety before any disaster. Alarm system, radio and television alert must be introduced to the citizen. We should make ready a plan for the citizen in the island where and how to get to the emergency locations you build.
We do not pray for bad things to happen but we must be ready in case it does. If it does happen we must be ready to minimize its impact on our people and let each one of us know that we are not alone we are over 164 million Nigerians
